3 Kingdom Trilogy
Wei, Shu and Wu: One Epic Story, Three Exciting Games
In 2018, our team embarked on an exciting project: creating our first trilogy slot game, 3 Kingdoms, for Maverick. The initial idea came from the owner of Maverick, and it was a perfect fit for us, as we had three distinct slot game engines ready to be utilized.
I was eager to dive into this project and bring my own vision to the 3 Kingdoms story. To gain a deeper understanding, I immersed myself in research, exploring the historical novel, watching TV series and playing games inspired by it, and even consulting with Chinese friends and colleagues familiar with the tale. I also analyzed competitor games with the same theme to identify opportunities for innovation.
With a solid understanding of the source material, I began sketching the logo and game assets. However, after my initial logo sketch, I decided to move directly to digital design, as I felt it would be more efficient for exploring different typography and texture options. I also chose to conceptualize the designs for all three games simultaneously to ensure they shared a common thread while maintaining their individual identities. Our talented 2D artist then skilfully brought my sketches and ideas to life.

Creative and Art Direction, Concept, Draft Illustration, Content WritingTo further enrich the visual experience, I guided our 3D artist in conceptualizing the three main characters for each game. I provided detailed instructions on their features and how they should be portrayed, and the final results were outstanding. Our frontend developer then used his coding expertise to create stunning animation effects that brought these characters to life.
This project also marked the arrival of our incredibly talented sound designer. He immediately elevated our sound quality, improving upon the initial sounds we had in place. From that point on, he created original soundtracks for all our games, adding a whole new dimension to our players’ experience.
Throughout the development process, we adopted a collaborative approach in our studio. After integrating all the elements from the initial design concept, we would gather as a team to review the games, looking for ways to enhance them further. I often challenged the team with new ideas and requests, which, I admit, could be demanding. However, they consistently rose to the occasion, delivering exceptional results.
I did the content writing/storytelling for all our games. Watch out! A little more long read for I leave you with the introduction excerpt I wrote for all 3 Kingdom games’ game sheet:
