Art of the Fist

Based from the movie, Fist of Fury.

In 2019, our team was tasked with creating a game based on the legendary Bruce Lee. We were all excited to take on this challenge, and I immediately gravitated towards his classic and popular movie, Fist of Fury, as the inspiration for our game. To immerse ourselves in the source material, we rewatched the film together, paying close attention to its iconic scenes and visual style.

I wanted to push the boundaries of a typical Bruce Lee-themed game, so I began by sketching various drafts of a bobblehead Bruce Lee character. Our talented 3D artist then transformed my sketches into a fantastic 3D model, capturing Bruce Lee’s likeness and energy perfectly. Meanwhile, our 2D artist began working on a cool adaptation of the movie’s setting for our game’s background.

As the background was taking shape, I had an idea to incorporate an anaglyph 3D and halftone art style to give it a modern twist. This was a subtle homage to the movie Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse, which was in theatres at the time. Our team embraced this idea, and we collaborated closely to bring this unique vision to life.

I’m thrilled with how this game came to fruition. It’s a cool blend of classic and modern styles, and it even utilizes our new expanding wild feature engine. Despite its action-packed theme, we managed to inject a sense of fun into the gameplay, creating a truly engaging and entertaining experience.

To further enhance the game’s atmosphere, we worked closely with our sound designer to create a soundtrack that blended traditional Chinese music with modern elements. We also incorporated iconic sound effects from the movie to add an extra layer of authenticity.

I did the content writing/storytelling for all our games. I leave you with the introduction excerpt I wrote for this game’s game sheet:

“WAYAA!!! Feel Chen’s fury!
The Master of the Fist is punching his way on this 3×5, 20 line slots. Witness Chen as he retaliates towards the Hongku dojo and beats the hell out random multipliers from his rivals – Feng, Petrov and Suzuki. This medium volatility game based from a well-known 1972 Chinese movie offers re-triggerable free spins with accumulating multipliers! Art of Fist is equipped with expanding wilds that take over the whole reel to boost winning chances.”
